Nurse training project lauded as outstanding example of quality improvement in practice
One of Vets Now’s clinics has been recognised by the RCVS as a ‘Champion Practice’ for driving continuous quality improvement.
The RCVS Knowledge Awards are designed to showcase quality improvement implementation in practice, and the individuals and teams that have driven improvement within the profession.
Our Macclesfield clinic won the award for improving the quality of general anaesthetic and sedation monitoring.
Meanwhile, our Glasgow hospital were highly commended by the judges for their work on improving and monitoring hand hygiene.
Principal nurse manager in Macclesfield Lesley Moore, who submitted the case for consideration, said: “The nursing team in Macclesfield have spent around 18 months trying to improve standards in anaesthesia and I felt that this was something worth recognising, even if we didn’t win, which I never believed we would.
“We all share the same goal of wanting the best for each and every one of our patients and we have worked exceptionally hard in a number of areas, not just anaesthesia, mainly in our own time.
“This is recognition of all the effort our team has put in and how much they have developed as ECC nurses. I am so proud of the nursing and support team I lead and the award is something we can all be part of.”
After going through a blind peer-review process, the Macclesfield project was praised for its impressive work in the area of quality improvement, its nurse involvement, and potential to promote improvement in other areas of the practice.
The team have been invited to speak about their learnings in a session at the Veterinary Evidence Today conference in June, where they will also be presented with their award.
Discussing what the award means for Vets Now, Lesley added, “Winning the award demonstrates the fantastic standard of care that we provide as a company.
“I have seen the work we have done genuinely improve patient outcomes and we receive a lot of excellent feedback from clients about the service we provide.”
Racheal Marshall, head of clinical nursing at Vets Now, praised our teams in Macclesfield and Glasgow for their commitment to high standards. She said: “Our staff are constantly using their skills and knowledge to ensure Vets Now remains at the forefront of emergency veterinary care and it’s fantastic to see Lesley and her team in Macclesfield, and Gillian White and her team in Glasgow, being rewarded for this.
“It also highlights the vital role of the veterinary nursing profession in driving forward quality improvement through clinical audit.
“These awards embody Vets Now’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of the professions in enhancing emergency practice and should reassure our partner practices that clients and their pets will receive the highest standard of care in their time of need.”
All of Vets Now’s out-of-hours clinics are RCVS-accredited small animal emergency service clinics.
