Just like in human medicine, dogs often need blood transfusions when they’re sick or injured.
At Vets Now, we treat more than 120,000 pet emergency cases every year so we know how vital blood transfusions are and how important it is to have quick and easy access to this blood.
That’s why – in 2007 – we funded the creation of Pet Blood Bank UK, the country’s first and only animal blood bank charity.
It specialises in providing a canine blood bank service for all vets across the UK, giving them timely access to blood for use in emergencies and in providing critical care to dogs.
Pet owners kindly bring their much loved canine companions to donate at collection sessions across the country. See our video of what happens at a donation session.
This blood is then processed and separated into different blood products and supplied to veterinary practices across the UK, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including Vets Now clinics and hospitals.
To date, Pet Blood Bank UK has supplied more than 27,000 units of blood and helped save the lives of thousands of dogs.
Now an independent charity Vets Now is very proud to continue to support and partner Pet Blood Bank UK, where a single unit of blood can save the lives of four dogs.
